Your lips are a prominent feature of your appearance and your expression. In fact, your lips are probably one of the first things that people notice about you. However, if you are not happy with the fullness or the shape of your lips, volumising treatments can be used to achieve balance, symmetry and volume.

What are dermal volumising and contouring treatments?

Dermal lip volumiser products are made with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that is found in the body, mainly in the skin. Hyaluronic acid works by attracting and holding water, which will add volume to the treated area. Treatment can enhance the size and shape of the lips, hydrate the lips and correct asymmetry, making them in harmony with the rest of the face.

What to Expect

During your consultation with Dr Lowe or one of our experienced clinicians, you will discuss how you want your lips to look and what will happen during your treatment. One of our friendly team members will assess your unique features and discuss your goals to develop a personalised treatment plan, designed to provide you with the best treatment possible, tailored to your needs.

The lip enhancement procedure involves applying the lip volumising and contouring treatment directly to the lip, to build the desired shape and add the right amount of volume. Results can be seen in as little as three to four days, and can last about six to 12 months.

Ideal Candidates

Significant adverse reactions are very uncommon, making this an ideal treatment for almost anyone. Lip volumising treatments are ideal for anyone who wants to add more volume to their lips, create more definition or simply improve the symmetry of their lips. Since the results are temporary, this is also an ideal treatment for anyone who isn’t looking for anything permanent. However, some factors can make a candidate not suitable for treatment, such as having certain health conditions. Ultimately, a consultation at MUSE Clinic Sydney is the best way to decide if you are a suitable candidate for treatment with lip volumisers.

Ideal candidates can include those who:

  • Are physically and mentally healthy
  • Do not have any active cold sores on the lips
  • Are non-smokers
  • Will follow the necessary recovery instructions
  • Do not have heath conditions that can potentially impact the healing process during recovery
  • Hold realistic expectations for the outcome of the dermal lip volumiser procedure

The Lip Treatment Procedure

At the beginning of the procedure, a local anaesthetic cream and an ice pack will be applied in order to minimise any discomfort.

Every patient’s lips are treated differently but we will ensure that you are happy with the fullness and shape of your lips every step of the way. If for any reason you are not happy with your results, let us know and we will address your concerns.

Depending on your goals for treatment, the lip filler procedure can be personalised to:

  • Enhance the size of the lips
  • Correct the shape of the lips
  • Correct asymmetry
  • Soften creases in the lips
  • Soften wrinkles on the side of the lips
  • Hydrate the lips
  • Create a lifting effect
  • Define the Cupid’s bow

The average lip treatment doesn’t take longer than 30 minutes. Lip volumiser and contouring treatments require very little to no downtime, so you are free to return to work directly after your appointment.

One of our experienced clinians will develop a personalised treatment plan during your consultation, so that you will know what to expect during the procedure.

Recovery

After your lip volumiser treatment, you may experience some minor swelling or bruising, but this is normal and should only last for a few days to one week. Although you are able to return to your usual daily activities straight after treatment, there are some precautions and care instructions that you will need to have in place in order to ensure a smooth recovery. During your consultation at MUSE Clinic Sydney, you will receive personalised recovery instructions to follow. Instructions may include to:

  • Gently apply cold compress to reduce swelling
  • Try to sleep with your head slightly elevated
  • Apply a bruise treatment cream to help any bruising subside
  • Avoid oil-based skincare and makeup on the day of treatment
  • Avoid excessive heat exposure for 48 hours
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours
  • Stay hydrated and follow a healthy diet
  • Avoid smoking
  • Avoid excessive alcohol on the day of treatment

Frequently Asked Questions

While lip treatments are long-lasting, they are not permanent, and patients who wish to maintain their results will need top-up treatment begins to wear off. Lip treatments can last from six to 12 months, depending on how quickly your body will naturally metabolise over time.

The temporary nature of lip treatments is a benefit of the treatment, as tweaks and changes can easily be made when managing results. In the case that results from treatment are unsatisfactory, just contact the clinic and we will address your concerns.

How long that lip treatments will last will depend on each patient’s metabolism. Some patient’s treatment can last for months longer than others. Generally, anywhere from six to 12 months would be typical.

You may be able to combine other procedures with your lip treatments, such as wrinkle reduction treatment or laser treatments. If combining interests you, you can discuss this during your consultation with one of our experienced clinicians.

You can resume wearing lipstick the next day. Since your lips will need some time to heal after treatment (usually about one week so that swelling and any bruising can subside) we recommend not receiving dermal lip treatments immediately before an event or special occasion.

A topical numbing cream and an ice pack will be applied to the lips at the beginning of the procedure to ensure patient comfort. Therefore, you should not be able to feel anything during the procedure.

To prepare, you should avoid consuming alcohol, and stop taking certain medications that can thin your blood as this can hinder the body’s ability to heal after the lip procedure. You should not wear any lipstick on the day of your procedure, and you should make sure to stay hydrated. At your initial consultation, some specific preparation instructions will be outlined to you, so that you can get ready for your procedure and ensure that your lips are in the best condition to receive treatment.

As long as the lip procedure is performed by an experienced clinician, you will still be able to move your lips properly after the procedure. Initially, minor swelling may make the lips feel less comfortable to move, however, this is temporary and should only last for a few days. After swelling has subsided, you should be able to move your lips in the exact same way that you naturally could before your procedure.

At MUSE Clinic, we strive to deliver natural-looking results. Therefore, your lips will not look overdone or unnatural. Our goal is to enhance the natural beauty of each patient, creating subtle results that complement the patient’s appearance.

The lips can bleed very minimally during the lip procedure with dermal lip volumiser and contouring treatments. Bleeding during and after the procedure will only be a cause for concern if the patient has taken certain medications or supplements that can thin the blood before the procedure. This is why we advise to pause taking these medications while preparing for your treatment. For more information on how to prevent bleeding during the procedure, you can discuss the necessary preparation steps with one of our clinicians during your consultation.

When you choose a highly experienced clinician to perform your treatment, you should be left with smooth, natural and even lips. However, initial swelling may make your lips appear uneven. This is temporary and will subside within a few days to one week at the most.

It can be hard to determine the amount of treatment that you will need before having a one-on-one consultation at our Sydney clinic. Your personal aesthetic goals for your lips will determine the amount of treatment that you will need, as well as the current shape and volume of your lips.
