Cellulite

Cellulite is an age-old skin concern and one that tends to affect women far more than it does men.

Cellulite tends to appear on areas such as the buttocks, thighs and stomach most often but the arms can also be affected. While many people like to believe that cellulite is directly linked to weight, this isn’t always the case – even skinny women can get cellulite.

Cellulite is the result of pockets of fat pushing up through the supporting fibres under the skin, which creates a dimpling effect. This ‘orange peel’ effect can be highly noticeable and make you feel self-conscious when certain areas of your body are exposed. Thanks to advancements in cosmetic medicine, however, cellulite can be treated.

Common Causes of Sagging Skin

Types of Cellulite

Soft Cellulite
Soft cellulite is the easiest to treat and is usually the result of hormonal changes, age and weight gain. Soft cellulite shows up in conjunction with sagging skin around the thighs, stomach, arms or buttocks because there is poor muscle or skin tone.

Hard Cellulite
This particular type of cellulite is quite difficult to treat and develops over several years, with weight gain and obesity being the main culprits. Hard cellulite is usually located in the thighs, buttocks, hips or the knees. Hard cellulite has a compact appearance and can be painful.

Oedematous Cellulite
Oedema cellulite occurs when there is fluid retention and poor circulation and often shows up in the lower parts of the legs as well as the thighs. Because water retention can be treated, it is possible to treat oedema cellulite too. A lack of exercise and poor diet are generally the main causes of this type of cellulite.

Common Causes of Cellulite

There are several reasons why cellulite can start showing up on your body, including:

– Genetics. Race, gender or even a slow metabolism can all play a role in how likely it is that you will struggle with cellulite during your lifetime.

– Hormonal Changes. Insulin, oestrogen, prolactin and thyroid hormones are all involved in the production of cellulite. Hormonal fluctuations that lead to a breakdown or collagen and poor circulation can make cellulite more likely.

– Eating Habits. What you eat definitely plays a role in whether or not cellulite will develop. Diets that are high in sugar, salt and refined foods will increase the likelihood of cellulite. It’s also important to stay hydrated as this helps your body get rid of harmful toxins that may weaken the skin.

– Lifestyle Habits. If you sit behind a desk for prolonged periods of time and don’t get much exercise, there’s a good chance that cellulite will start to form. Smokers are also more prone to developing cellulite because it affects their circulation.

– Muscle Tone. If you want to reduce your chances of developing cellulite, spend more time toning your muscles.

Cellulite Treatment Options

Along with making healthy lifestyle adjustments, here are a few of the cosmetic treatment options available to you:

– Ultherapy

Ultherpy stimulates the production of collagen so we are able to target the areas of the body prone to cellulite. The ultrasound energy is able to penetrate the deep layers lifting and tightening the lower dermal structure. Most Ultherapy treatments take less than an hour with only mild discomfort.

– Collagen Stimulators

Collagen and elastin are two essential proteins that work to keep your skin firm and supple but as we age, collagen and elastin levels naturally decline. Collagen stimulators work by adding volume to areas that need to be plumped out, while also stimulating the growth of collagen. Several collagen stimulators will be injected deep into the dermis of the affected area, where the ingredients will gradually begin to improve the condition of your skin. Several treatments will be required to see significant results.
